Grill Healthier this Labor Day

If there’s one thing that I love, it’s grilling outdoors. I come from the land of beer and brats (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) so you can imagine how difficult it is to keep healthy during the summer. Every holiday, party, and let’s face it, weekend, involves some sort of grilled sausage and beer.

In addition to Labor Day this weekend I also have the celebrations of my mother, father and brother’s birthdays. You can imagine how much bigger of a holiday this weekend becomes. And of course, we’re grilling out. This weekend for my family is traditionally marked with grilled meats, endless pasta and potato salads and lots of cake! I was tasked with coming up with the menu for the weekend and thought perhaps I would try my hand at a lightened up cookout. And so I turned to turkey.

Ground turkey is one of my favorite go-to meats when it comes to grilling out healthier. To me it’s like clay that I can mold into thousands of wonderful things just by switching up a few herbs and spices. If you really want to cut out the fat you can go with the extra lean variation of ground turkey but typically for burgers I go with the regular lean version. For these burgers I decided to go with a zestier flavor by including the Instantly Fresh Jalapenos, Cilantro and Spring Onion. And to keep it healthier, I used a reduced-fat cheddar cheese and the new Opadipity Chipotle Ranch dip. Since this dip is made with Greek yogurt, it’s lower in fat and calories. And if you like a little kick, this dip is for you! The task of grilling out in a healthy fashion doesn’t have to be so boring. You can avoid unhealthy meats by switching to ground turkey, chicken sausages and marinated chicken breasts. As for sides, consider a healthier pasta salad and for dessert, consider a Watermelon Feta Salad. With my healthy cookout planned, I’m ready to impress my family with flavors and half of the fat and calories.

Chipotle Cheddar Turkey Burgers

Serves 4 | Finish in 20 minutes

This lightened up summer burger is filled with flavors and lower in calories.


1 pound lean ground turkey,
1 egg,
1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs,
1 teaspoon salt,
1 tablespoon Instantly Fresh Jalapenos,
1 tablespoon Instantly Fresh Spring Onion,
1 teaspoon Instantly Fresh Cilantro,
½ cup sliced shallots,
1 tablespoon butter,
1 tablespoon olive oil,
4 slices cheddar cheese,
4 hamburger buns,
¼ cup Opadipity Chipotle Ranch,
Lettuce and Tomato to Garnish,


1. In a large bowl combine the turkey, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, jalapeno, spring onion and cilantro. Using your hands, mix the ingredients well together. Divide the mixture into 4 equal parts and flatten into patties.

2. Heat a grill to medium-high heat and cook for 5-6 minutes on each side, until the burgers are no longer pink in the center. Place the cheese on each of the patties and the buns face down on the grill and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

3. While the burgers are cooking prepare the shallots by melting the butter in a skillet along with the olive oil. Add in the shallots and cook over medium-low heat to allow the shallots to wilt and become caramelized, 5-10 minutes.

4. Plate the buns with burgers and divide the caramelized shallots, Chipotle Ranch and lettuce & tomato evenly amongst the burgers. Serve immediately.
