All summer long there are never any debates in my house about what to do. Living by the lakefront and in a city of summer festivals presents a nice assortment of activities. And then fall hits. The temperatures cool and then it seems like there is not much to do. I start to spend more time in the house, on the couch, watching television. Boring!
I’ve been trying to come up with more activities to do now that it isn’t as warm out. Fall seems to be a good time to pick things. Apples, pumpkins, they both need picking. This is a great activity for you and your family. Most pumpkin farms also offer apple picking as well as a variety of other activities for your family. Corn maze, anyone? Before the snow falls, bundle up and take your family picking.
You can keep the family activities flowing once you get home by putting all of the apples and pumpkins to good use. Family baking is also another great activity. Although, I prefer the eating part, it’s always great to get a bunch of hands in the kitchen. There’s something about the potential idea of getting really messy that kids really enjoy.
A great use for all of those fall apples is a delicious apple crisp. With child-safe knives, you can get everyone involved in the dicing. (Supervised, of course.) Pull out the pastry blender and task someone with crumbling up the topping for your apple crisp. The crisp won’t take long to bake once it is in the oven. When it’s all finished, gather around the table to dish out helpings of apple crisp with ice cream and Litehouse Old Fashioned Caramel dip. There’s nothing more delicious and American than this classic dessert.
Here are some other great ideas of family fun activities to celebrate Fall:
- Ice Skating (When it gets colder, of course.)
- Family movies & popcorn night
- Create your own pizza night
- Outdoor touch-football game
- Visit a local museum
