A Sensory Journey with Tangy Orange Citrus Salmon

When is the last time that you took the time to taste your food? I mean really taste your food by using all of your senses?  It is my firm belief that to get the full effect from food you must eat with all 5 senses. Nowadays too many people eat in a rush or on the go and don’t take the time to relish what they are consuming. Too often we miss a good majority of what a dish has to offer because we are only eating with our sense of taste.

Savoring a delicious dish involves so much more than just taste. It includes taking a moment to enjoy the aromas of a freshly made meal and the stimulation of how the dish is visually prepared. While preparing this salmon, I slowed myself down just enough to really enjoy all that it had to offer. The beautiful orange of the fish caught my eye at my grocery store almost as if the salmon had chosen me. I selected the Litehouse Tangy Orange Citrus as a marinade to bring out the refreshing flavor of summer and topped it with a sprinkle of pistachios. Pistachios are such a lovely, light nut and offer a nice crunch to the top of the salmon.

I decided to grill the filet on a cedar plank which can be found at most stores that sell grilling supplies. The cedar plank will give the salmon a wonderful smoky flavor and will help the fish to retain moisture during the cooking process. I sat on my couch while grilling the fish and enjoyed the lingering smell of cedar drifting in through my windows. I also listened to the water soaked cedar plank crackle and sizzle as it was heated by the grill, cooking the fish. I plated the salmon with a rice pilaf, a slice of orange and a sprig of dill to really pull the dish together. I find that visually appealing plates are much more enticing to indulge in than something that has been thrown together. I really took the time to savor the flakiness of the fish, the light citrus flavors and the smoky finish with each bite.  Adding to the sense of touch was the crunch of the pistachios in my mouth which were lightly toasted on top of the salmon, completing my sensory journey through this meal.
